Heat Treating Cuba

Last year Gord and Dale Montgomery of “The Monty Heat Treat News” visited Cuba in a desperate hunt to find a heat treating facility in this Caribbean country. Alas we were unable to find one although we did hear rumors about an installation.

As it turns out the rumors were correct and we can now provide some details. Roughly 20 years ago the Cuban government realized that they needed heat treatment capacity to support some government “initiatives”-they turned to Italian furnace builder CIEFFE, one of the largest furnace builders in Italy for assistance.

The end result was that the company provided a complete and varied heat treat department which consists of a small batch IQ line with working dimensions of 24″ x 36″ x 24″,  a nitriding system and a vacuum furnace. All of the furnaces continue to be in operation and CIEFFE provides support as required.

So in answer to the trivia question “Is there any heat treating in Cuba”? The answer is yes, a grand total of one captive heat treat installation.

The one photo included here shows a typical CIEFFE batch IQ installation although certainly larger in size than the Cuba installation.
