Schaeffler Bearings Closes Plant-to Auction Off Heat Treat Furnaces

In Germany we see that Schaeffler Bearings, one of the world’s largest captive heat treaters has closed their ball bearing facility in Homburg, Germany and is putting all of the equipment up for auction. Included in the equipment being auctioned off is the entire in house heat treat facility which consists mainly of large rotary retort furnaces. While a few heat treaters still run rotary retorts they have largely fallen out of fashion and now occupy a very tiny part of the heat treat world.

In the global heat treatment industry bearing manufacturers such as Schaeffler rank amongst the largest captive heat treaters in the world by volume and they certainly operate some of the most advanced, state of the art furnaces available. Just last year as an example Schaefller completed instillation of a new, very advanced batch IQ facility at their plant in Joplin, Missouri, USA.
