Shortage of Hi Temperature Alloy Casting Capacity in North America?

At one time Alcon Industries of Cleveland, Ohio, USA was arguably the largest supplier of cast alloy fixturing in North America-while it lost this distinction some time ago it has remained a major supplier to the industry. With the firm’s recent layoffs, several heat treaters have reached out to ask if there is the possibility of a shortage of cast alloy capacity in North America. The answer is an unequivocall no. There are several large high temperature cast alloy suppliers based in North America, Europe and Asia currently supplying the North American market with enough capacityy to easily supply the market.

SEPTEMBER 24, 2026 POSTING “Major USA Foundry Laying off Employees”, UPDATE! Monday September 21, 2002 as part of our “Heat Treatment “Monday Morning Briefing” we included this exclusive heat treat news item;

“A USA foundry and substantial supplier of cast furnace fixturing and components laid off most of their employees two weeks ago. Some employees remain but our understanding is that production has largely ceased. We will have updates on this story as they become available.”

The foundry in question is “Alcon Industries” in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, a foundry which has long been one of the most well-known and respected in the North American heat treat industry. Details remain “sketchy” but our understanding is that the company has had a number of layoffs and a reader received the response below from Alcon just last week in response to an e-mailed RFQ.
