Rock Drill Manufacturer Inaugurates Heat Treatment Plant

Back in 2019 Swedish rock drill manufacturer EPIROC announced plans to invest in a new heat treatment plant; “Epiroc has held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new heat treatment plant for rock drills at one of its global manufacturing hubs in Örebro, Sweden.”

Just yesterday the firm issued a press release that the new facility had been inaugurated. Noticeably absent from the press releases was any mention about the type of equipment or even the suppliers. Our understanding at “The Monty Heat Treat News” is that the equipment includes a LPC system from ECM of France and a batch IQ furnace with salt quenching from AFC-Holcroft of the US.

Modern, energy-efficient expansion of company’s existing rock drill workshop facility in Örebro

EPIROC will today inaugurate a new, modern heat-treatment plant for rock drills in Örebro, Sweden.

Heat treatment is an essential part of rock drill manufacturing. The new heat treatment plant, built through an expansion of the current workshop building, will benefit customers by further strengthening rock drill quality and performance, lowering their total cost of ownership. It will also allow higher production volumes.

Production at the 1,400 sq m heat-treatment plant will be able to run 24h a day thanks to automation. Energy efficiency is a key focus for the design; for example, residual heat will be recycled internally to heat buildings as well as externally to Örebro’s local heating system. The building also has solar panels.

‘This new heat-treatment plant is a key step towards ensuring that our world-class manufacturing site in Örebro will remain as productive and competitive as possible for the long term, and it was designed to optimize energy efficiency,’ said Helena Hedblom, Epiroc’s president and chief executive officer.

Örebro is one of Epiroc’s global manufacturing hubs. The company employs approximately 2,900 people in the city, out of a global workforce of around 17,000.
