Peter Jones “The Godfather” of Automotive Vacuum Carburizing

It is with great regret that we mention the very recent passing of Mr. Peter Jones in Ontario, Canada-an individual who many considered “The Godfather” of automotive vacuum carburizing. Peter was originally from the UK but moved to Canada where he worked with automotive parts supplier Stackpole for many years. While he was certainly not the inventor of vacuum carburizing (low pressure carburizing) he was one of the first to embrace it whole heartedly in the auto industry. The end result was that for many years Stackpole had the largest vacuum carburizing department in the world. In conjunction with others at Stackpole he was awarded several patents for his work on heat treatment of automotive transmission components. The loss of his tremendous experience is indeed a loss to the entire industry.
