When it comes to in house heat treating in Mexico the automotive industry is far and away the largest in the country, however the Aerospace industry is also an up and coming industry which brings with it top end heat treating. The Aerospace Cluster in Chihuahua, Mexico, is the largest employer of aerospace engineers and technicians in the country, accounting for 1/3 of the entire aerospace labor force out of all of the clusters in Mexico. It is home to companies such as Cessna, Beechcraft, Textron Aviation, Bell , Honeywell, CAV Aerospace, Kaman, Tighitco, Soisa Aerospace and Zodiac Aerospace to name a few. The company that concerns us today is Honeywell Aerospace de Mexico. A reader in Mexico sent us this photo of the most recent addition to the company’s heat treat department. What we see in this picture is a Batch IQ furnace with working dimensions of 36″ X 48″ X 36″ being installed and in the background we see a dual module endothermic generator with a capacity of 9,000 CFH. This facility also made our news section a number of years back when they installed a new Ipsen vacuum furnace.

“To continue providing customers with the best metallurgical results, members from Ipsen’s Service, Engineering and Management teams recently completed an advanced pyrometry training. The 13 members who attended learned how key changes made in the latest revision (F) of the AMS2750 specifications affect pryometric testing.
The class, offered by renowned consultant Doug Shuler of Pyro Consulting LLC, is part of a continuing education initiative in which the company encourages its employees to participate. This training provides hands-on instruction on thermocouples, instrument calibrations, system accuracy testing and temperature uniformity surveys as well as the Nadcap auditing process.
This knowledge is applied in-house during engineering considerations and in the field while service technicians perform calibrations and surveys. For decades, Ipsen has provided pyrometry-related services to ensure equipment adheres to Nadcap and other industry requirements. For more information on Ipsen’s calibration services, visit www.ipsenusa.com/calibrations.”

If it has to do with manufacturing firearms or ammunition every single supplier is running flat out these days. In this press release L&L Special furnace tells us how they sold a system to an ammunition supplier in Eastern Europe.
“L&L Special Furnace Co., Inc., has shipped a dual-chamber heat treating and temper furnace along with an oil quench tank to a leading Eastern European ammunition manufacturer. The equipment will play a supportive role in keeping key production equipment on-line along with thermal processing of munitions projectiles. The project was brought to L&L by Kevin Brennan of Summit Associates, a long-standing Sales Representative for L&L.
The L&L model QDS124 has two chambers: the top chamber rated to 2,350°F is used for heat treating various steels and other non-ferrous materials. The bottom chamber, which is rated for 1,250°F, includes a recirculation fan and baffle for tempering, stress relief, or pre-heating.”

Today Carlos Torres of “The Heat Treat Podcast” speaks with Mr. “Chip” Keough about the austempering process. Chip and his family have been heavily involved with the heat treatment industry for many years through companies such as AFC-Holcroft of and Applied Process, which is probably the largest commercial heat treater specializing in salt processing in North America. To compliment this discussion we rummaged through our picture drawer and came up with this picture of Chip with Gord Montgomery taken back in 2009. The photo was taken at the Applied Process facility in Livonia, Michigan.

December 29th, 2020 we mentioned that one of the oldest commercial heat treats in North American would be closing their doors at the end of the year. The company did indeed close and the equipment will be auctioned off March 19th to the 25th. Full details of the auction can be found by following the link on the top right hand side of this page.
“Robert Wooler Company Closing-The End of an Era; It is truly with regret that we mention the closing of one of the oldest commercial heat treating companies in North America, the Robert Wooler Company of Dresher, Pennsylvania, USA. Founded in 1923 the company has a very impressive history which includes NADCAP certification which allowed the firm to service many of the local aerospace companies. At its peak a few years back it had over 40 employees making it a larger than average commercial heat treater. Even recently the company employed 25 employees and was a viable business, however a number of factors including the difficulty in finding good experienced employees lead to the owner deciding to close it down. The last work is being accepted this week and the company will continue to process customers’ parts through at least the first quarter of 2021 with the equipment being auctioned off the second quarter of 2021. As a footnote to this story we will add that as far as we can tell the oldest commercial heat treater in the USA is Commercial Steel Treating Company in Michigan started in 1916 by Anthony and Ralph Hoensheid.”

We have long felt that Nitriding-gas, vacuum or plasma is the fastest growing heat treating technology in the market today. We are not for a second saying it is the largest technology out there-it will be many, many years before it catches up to gas carburizing as an example but on a % basis the growth in nitriding has been quite impressive over the past number of years. This brings us to a press release we were just sent from HI TecMetal Group in the US Midwest in which they talk about a vacuum nitrider they just added.
“Nitriding FNC treatment of steel and cast irons is carried out in the temperature range of 590 °C (1094 °F) -740 °C (1364 °F) using a gaseous nitrogen and carbon bearing atmosphere. The treatments develop iron nitride surface compound layers between 5µm (≈.0002”) – 50 µm thick (≈.002”), supported by a nitrogen carbon rich diffusion zone in the substrate.
By choice of treatment temperature, time and nitrogen potential of atmosphere, the microstructure, composition and hardness of the compound layer and the sub-surface diffusion zone are controlled. An innovative oxidation technique, combined with specially formulated aqueous quenchant and organic sealant are incorporated, depending on the engineering requirements of a specific application.
Our newest furnace is equipped with an advanced control system to assure process accuracy and repeatability. The 48” wide x 72” long x 4” high work envelope will handle loads up to 7,000 pounds. This furnace provides HI TecMetal Group the ability to shorten customer turnaround times while providing the same superior quality of product that HTG customers have come to appreciate. As our customers grow so do we.”

In Mexico we see that a long time heat treater, Mr. Juan Eliseo Cruz Ortega has made a change. For a number of years he worked with commercial heat treater ALD Trataientos Termicos in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico (ALD has two facilities in North America, this one and a larger facility in Port Huron, Michigan, USA which is called ALD Thermal Treatment. Both focus on vacuum carburizing of automotive transmission components. Find out who ALD compares in size to other North American commercial heat treaters at https://themonty.com/project/l
Well within the last month Juan made an interesting change and he is now Senior Project Manager at ECM USA in Coahuila, Mexico. In this position Juan will be helping ECM to establish its position in Mexico and also support their current and new projects in Mexico and also in the US. In these photos we see Juan and also two pictures of the ALD plant in Ramos Arizpe as we at “The Monty Heat Treat News” saw it in 2015.
