Last week alloy supplier Steeltech in Grand Rapids, Michigan suffered a serious fire as “The Monty Heat Treat News” reported. We now have this update from the company.

“Steeltech would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support we have been receiving from our customers and suppliers to our company. We were very fortunate that on Friday morning the fire department was able to contain the fire to only one area of our Grand Rapids facility. Due to the training that we received from the Metal Treating Institute, Steeltech had a fire and catastrophe backup plan in place. With the implementation of this plan, we were able to quickly set up new manufacturing cells in another area of our plant to continue operations. We have worked around the clock to put the necessary equipment in place so we are able to continue with production this week, and we expect minimal delays as a result. Thanks again for all of your support, and you can continue to conduct business confidently with Steeltech. Please contact a Steeltech representative today if you have any questions or would like a quotation on any of your alloy casting needs. Tony Salerno President / CEO Steeltech LLC”

In Germany we see that furnace builder Nabertherm is finding business good enough to add more manufacturing capacity as you can see in the press release below. Nabertherm last made our news section in 2019 when they appointed a new Managing Director Timm Grotheer who can be seen in the one photo below.

“Nabertherm Press Release; “Our existing production hall will be expanded by a production area of 3,600 m2. The number of complex plants for thermal process technology in industrial applications has increased further. With the expansion of the production facility we will be better able to handle more projects and serve our customers better. Photo; Groundbreaking ceremony for the start of construction. “April 18/2019 Press Release; Nabertherm GmbH, Bremen, Germany, has announced the appointment of Timm Grotheer as its new Managing Director. Grotheer, who previously served as Managing Director of shipbuilding group Lürssen, succeeds Friedrich-Wilhelm Wentrot, who has served as Managing Director of the company for eighteen years. Under Wentrot’s direction, Nabertherm reported that it has seen global success, employing more than 500 staff and achieving a turnover of more than €60 million ($68 million). A key element in Wentrot’s strategy has been the consistent internationalisation of the business, which now has an export share of 70%, selling its furnaces and plants around the world. As a shareholder and board member, Wentrot will continue to his involvement with Nabertherm for the foreseeable future. It is now expected that Grotheer will guide the company in continuing its worldwide growth and development. https://www.nabertherm.com/“

Solar Atmospheres of Western PA recently took occupancy of a brand new 15,000 square foot “connector” building. This building joins the existing 80,000 square foot workspace, which houses some of the largest vacuum furnaces in the world, to its current 10,000 square foot Nadcap laboratory, testing building and vacuum oil quenching building. The primary purpose of this new building is to create a clear and defined flow of work using a pull/push system, rather than having incoming and outgoing jobs co-mingled in front of heat treating equipment. All incoming jobs will now be “pulled” from this building and completed jobs will be “pushed” back to a designated outbound area. This new space will serve as a conduit for transfer of materials from production to final testing. Finally, the four new loading bays will allow for the loading and unloading of multiple trucks at one time. A drive through feature will allow all flatbed trucks to load/unload indoors, thus keeping shipping personnel and equipment out of the harsh winter elements.

Wes Hoffman, Shipping Manager states, ”Material handling is now thoughtful and organized throughout our 100,000 plus square foot facility. The new building has already proven to eliminate wasteful movement of material. This addition has also enhanced our overall safety. Instead of large trucks navigating our entire campus internally, we can now isolate trucks and drivers to the outer perimeter of the property. This improvement prominently positions Solar for continued growth well into the future.”

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA we find Steeltech Limited, a company which for almost 100 years has been providing heat and corrosion resistant products. In other words the company makes base trays, cast baskets, radiant tubes and all those other items which go into heat treatment furnaces. This past Friday the company suffered what at first glance appears to be a serious fire. We have no idea how this will effect the company but we hope that any damage is quickly rectified.

“GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Investigators in Grand Rapids are trying to determine the cause of a fire that damaged a building owned by Steeltech Limited. Crews from the Grand Rapids Fire Department were called to the fire in the 1200 block of Phillips Avenue near Hall Street and Buchanan Avenue SW around 1 a.m. Friday. When they arrived, flames were shooting through the roof of the building. Approximately 40 firefighters on the scene when News 8 arrived brought the fire under control in about an hour. Some nearby buildings that housed chemicals were in danger of catching fire, but ultimately were not damaged. A power pole fell during while firefighters were battling the blaze. GRFD contacted Consumers Energy to cut power to nearby electrical lines that were near the fire that posed a threat to firefighters.”

In San Antonio, Texas, USA we have learned that Spirit AeroSystems Inc. will be auctioning off some heat treat equipment due to the company consolidating operations. There are a few odds and ends but what is rather interesting is an Ajax Electric Salt Bath System. Typically these are not big sellers but this one looks to be in very nice condition and our guess would be that it will find a home. The auction will be held March 23 of this year.

East Carolina Metal Treating Inc., in Raleigh, NC, USA is a very impressive, family owned commercial heat treat which just narrowly missed making our list of the largest commercial heat treaters in North America in 2020 https://themonty.com/project/largest-north-american-commercial-heat-treats-august-2020/ While the main facility is in Raleigh the company has a second location in Lynchburg, Virginia called Virginia Metal Treating. For the past year now the company has been investing in a brand new building and the firm is now very pleased to announce that the new structure is complete and can be seen in this photo. We are also including a picture of the President of the company Mr. Jamie Ramm who can be seen in our second picture standing next to Gord Montgomery of “The Monty Heat Treat News”.

UK based Bodycote is known around the globe as the world’s largest commercial heat treater so it is rather odd to think that they indirectly helped in the development of the BioNTech/Pfizer RNA vaccine BNT162b2 for preventing COVID-19 infections-we will tell you how. In 2007 with the help of “The Monty” the company purchased a commercial heat treater in Munich, Germany by the name of Nitrion which at the time was owned by an individual by the name of Michael Motschmann.

Michael was a financier at heart rather than a heat treater and he took the funds he received from Bodycote (which were in the millions) and founded venture capital firm MIG Funds based in Germany. Early on he recognized the potential of Ugur Sahin’s and Özlem Türeci’s, founders of BioNTech with the result that he was one of the first and most substantial investors in the company which was formed in 2008. In 2020 BioNTech, in conjunction with Pfizer brought to market the world’s first vaccine for COVID-19. Michael remains an investor and the rest as they say is history. So indirectly part of the initial investment in BioNTech came from Bodycote which means we all owe the company a debt of gratitude.

As a footnote to this story we recently had a press release about Nitrion, Brazil installing two new vacuum nitriding units, a photo of which is below. There is no relationship between Nitrion, Brazil and Bodycote. The other pictures show Nitrion in 2007 and in the one we see from the left; Peter Parsinen, Michael Motschmann, Gord Montgomery, John Hubbard (CEO of Bodycote at the time) and Jan Elwart who at the time was head of Bodycote Europe.
