Back in 2019 Accurate Brazing in Greenville, SC, USA announced that they were committing to a second Hot Isostatic Press system. According to the company installation of the second system is almost complete as can be seen in this photo. Fond out how large Accurate Brazing is on our list of the 30 largest commercial heat treaters in North America https://themonty.com/project/largest-north-american-commercial-heat-treats-august-2020/

NOVEMBER 19, Posting; “Västerås, Sweden, November 19, 2019 – Accurate Brazing, a full-service provider of specialized heat treating solutions, added Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) to its thermal processing capabilities earlier this year. “Based on overwhelming feedback from the marketplace, we are pleased to be moving forward with our second Hot Isostatic Press from Quintus Technologies,” says Steven Francis, president of Accurate Brazing. Both presses are of the model QIH 122 M URC®. They are equipped with the Quintus proprietary uniform rapid cooling (URC) feature, which combines HIP and heat treatment in a single process. `

This process is called High Pressure Heat Treatment (HPHT), and it streamlines the steps involved in material densification and heat treatment. This innovative approach also enables all processed components to cool uniformly, resulting in minimal thermal distortion and non-uniform grain growth.  “The Quintus technology allows us to shorten lead times, improve product metallurgy, and eliminate some additional outside operations, which is very attractive to our customers,” says Mr. Francis.  Accurate Brazing serves the aerospace and power generation industries, as well as other sectors that demand high quality and short lead times. Many of Accurate Brazing’s customers utilize additive manufacturing (AM).  “The versatility of the Quintus units makes them well suited for our service business model,” says Mr. Francis.“

According to news reports there was an explosion and fire at Advanced Heat Treat Solutions yesterday which injured 4 people. Some reports suggest that one of the injured is Pritam Sethi, owner and founder of the company. Advanced Heat Treat Solutions is a commercial heat treater in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada who operates a mesh belt austemper line, vacuum furnaces, batch IQ furnaces and Induction hardening systems. Investigations are ongoing and no cause has yet been determined.

“Peel Police say four people are being treated for injuries following an industrial fire in Mississauga. Emergency crews responded to a heat treating facility on Anson Drive near Torbram and Derry Roads just before 11 a.m. “I was sitting in my office and it felt like a truck actually hit the building,” one witness said. “We came outside and noticed smoke coming out from across the street and a couple of people wandering around.” Paramedics say one person has been taken to a trauma centre in serious, but non-life threatening condition. Another patient was taken to hospital with minor injuries and two others were treated on scene.”

A Historical joint venture in the Turkish Heat Treatment Market.

“Three Istanbul-based heat treaters with more than 40 years of experience have combined. Alper, İnsa and Tamçelik Heat Treatment will now be known as Alpha Metalurji A.Ş. and will serve the manufacturing sector in Turkey. The combined company will have 8 locations in 4 different cities, and will provide job opportunities for more than 150 employees. This is the first time in the history of Turkish heat treatment that three rival companies have come together and joined forces. The company, aims to bring together high technology heat treatment processes with appropriate quality standards.

The agreement of the parties in the merger decision took about 8 months. With the fulfillment of the legal requirements, signatures were signed and Alpha Metalurji was established. According to company General Manager Koray Yavuz, the company’s turnover and number of employees will make it the largest in the Turkish heat treatment market. “The company will serve the automotive, defense and aerospace sectors, as well as aluminum extrusion and general machinery manufacturing.” said Utku Inan, Business Development Director at Alpha.”

A very unfortunate side effect of the COVID 19 pandemic has been increasing costs for heat treating supplies. Whether it is because of seemingly unlimited government funding, a growing economy or a combination of both really doesn’t matter-what does matter is that every single item required for heat treatment is going up in price combined with a longer delivery time. Furnaces, quench oil, alloy components, refractory, pumps-you name it everything is increasing in cost and will continue to do so for quite some time. Price increases range from relatively low (under 5%) to double digit increases for new furnaces due mainly to steel pricing. Need something, anything? Our recommendation is to get it on order ASAP.

When COVID-19 first hit the shores of North America and lockdowns became the order of the day the US and Canadian governments reacted quickly in the form of direct financial subsidies to businesses and individuals. While the consensus is that the subsidies were necessary the general consensus is also that the benefits provided were far too generous and a disincentive to going back to work-$15.00 USD per hour for not working does not exactly encourage individuals to go back to positions paying $12.00 per hour. The result is exactly what you would expect, captive and commercial heat treaters alike all over the US and Canada are reporting an enormous shortage of workers. Lets face it, working in a heat treat department is good, honorable work however it is also very hard work, want an example of the turmoil this is causing?

In Fletcher, NC, USA we find a large automotive parts supplier who also has a reasonably substantial in house heat treating department largely consisting of batch IQ furnaces. The shortage of workers for the heat treatment department recently became so acute that the company was forced to temporarily shut down the heat treatment department, outsource the work to a local commercial heat treater and reassign the few remaining heat treat workers to machining departments. At this point the closure is a temporary measure. We are not going to veer off into politics, however this is quite obviously a very large issue and one which is continuing.
