The system when commissioned will include: Computerized vibratory loading system, Rotary phosphate removal washer, Mesh belt hardening furnace, Oil quench system, Post quench wash system, Mesh belt temper furnace, soluble oil and part containerization system.
These fully integrated systems will feature CAN-ENG’s PET™ Process Enhancement Technology System (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) which provides the client with complete product traceability through the critical thermal process, process data collection, historical event archiving, process variable trend monitoring, scheduling optimization and energy consumption features which are unique to CAN-ENG systems.
This contract represents a continued partnership with a renowned Italian based fastener manufacturer, with previously installations located in the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Italy. These new systems will further increase CAN-ENG’s supply base and penetrate the European Union market following their commissioning early 2022.”

Molybdenum, a metal used in the heat treat industry because of its’ high temperature resistance is primarily seen in the heat treat industry in vacuum applications. Since the beginning of 2021 Molybdenum pricing has increased 27 USD/Kg or 114.89% according to trading on a contract for difference (CFD) that tracks the benchmark market for this commodity making the pricing the highest since 2008. Predictions are that it will continue to climb in price although not at the pace that we have been seeing. For users of moly it is expected that quoted prices will only be good for 1-2 weeks. While pricing for moly has increased substantially it is not that far off of all commodity pricing these days.

Earlier this year we had a news item about Merit Gear in Wisconsin closing their facility and selling the heat treat furnaces in an auction. It turns out that a large gear manufacturer bought all of the equipment (at least all of the good stuff) before the auction took place. Their plans are to install the pit furnaces at two locations, one in North America and one on another continent. Pit carburizing furnaces are the furnace style of choice for large gears and the company felt that this was the most cost effective solution. Based on the condition of the equipment we would agree.
“January 2021 News Item; Merit Gear, Antigo, Wisconsin, Closed-Heat Treating Furnaces to be Auctioned Off
Back in 2019 it was announced that Merit Gear in Antigo, Wisconsin, USA would be closing in the first quarter of 2020 (the original announcement is below). This prediction did indeed come to pass and the entire gear facility was closed in March of last year. This closing makes our news section today because the company had (has) a very large, fairly modern heat treat facility and “The Monty” has learned that all of the furnaces will be going to auction although no details are available yet-this makes for another “Monty” exclusive. The furnaces available are a number of large, fairly new pit carburizing furnace built by Surface Combustion less than 15 years ago. Hard to say how much attention the equipment will garner as there is never a strong demand for big pit carburizers. By the way this closing was yet another example of how the expected potential for wind energy in North America never materialized, we can think of at least half dozen big, captive heat treats built for wind energy which ended up being shut down.
“May 20. 2019. Antigo Mayor Bill Brandt says the city was informed Friday Merit Gear would close by March 2020. Merit Gear manufactures gearing and specialized gearboxes, which mainly serve the oil and gas industry. Brandt said the shutdown will be conducted in phases resulting in 80 people losing their jobs. “I was told this was a decision made in Milwaukee and there was no chance of reversing it.. We were as surprised as the Merit Gear employees,” Brandt explained to NewsChannel 7 Monday in an email. Rep. Felzkowski (R-Irma) and Senator Tom Tiffany (R-Minocqua) issued a joint-statement Monday.
“We are disappointed in Rexnord’s decision to close Merit Gear, which has been a staple of the Antigo business community since 1952. Our thoughts are with the hard-working employees who now find themselves in an extremely difficult situation. This uncertainty is stressful for these families, and we must come together to take care of our neighbors.” “Our priority will be in assisting our constituents during their job transition period in any way we can. We have sent a letter to Governor Evers and the Department of Workforce Development requesting that all resources within the administration are deployed to impacted employees and the community. Milwaukee-based Rexnord Corp. purchased Merit Gear in 2013. Merit Gear and Machine Company was formed in Antigo in 1952.”

L&L Special Furnace Company has shipped a floor–standing box furnace used for ceramic coating applications in the aerospace industry to a leader in the coating industry located in eastern Canada. The L&L Model XLE214 is used for curing and bonding ceramic coatings to various steel bodies primarily deployed in the aerospace industry. This process provides extra strength to aerospace parts that are subject to various heats and stresses under normal operating conditions. The furnace has an effective work zone of 22” wide by 16“ high by 20” deep. A horizontal door with ceramic hearth and support bricks is included to incorporate the customer’s loading system. Nickle chrome elements are used in the furnace that are resistant to any potential contamination the process may cause. Heat shields provide a safe–to–touch case temperature under operating conditions.

Two months ago “The Monty Heat Treat News” broke the news about Park Thermal, an international heat supplier abruptly closing their doors-we now have have the final episode. The new furnace manufacturing part of the business has closed, the used equipment the company had was auctioned off recently and now Kolene has bought the salt portion of the business. Several companies were interested in this and there was a verbal agreement to buy this portion of the business from a furnace manufacturer, however obviously this fell through and the story is now complete. At a later date we will tell you the rest of the story.

Rohde has delivered today a gas carburizing furnace with batch table and useable diameter of 2 m, and a depth of 3 m (79 x 118 in.) to Hanomag Lohnhaerterei in Hannover. The furnace is equipped with 5-zone heating (400 kW) and ROHDE online diffusion for carburization depths of up to 20 mm, carbon potential control via oxygen probe and gas analyzer. The picture was taken after the successful pre-acceptance warm test at the test field of the Rohde factory in Hanau.

Two weeks ago “The Monty Heat Treat News” printed a rumor that furnace supplier Ipsen was having a record breaking year. This press release appears to confirm that rumor.
