As we put together our list of the 50 largest commercial heat treaters in North America based upon annual sales we are looking at one of the oldest on the continent, family owned Euclid Heat Treating Company in Euclid, Ohio, USA. A summary of the company, from where they started to where they are now can be found below. By any standard Euclid is one of the larger commercial operations in North America-whether it makes our list or not time will tell. We thank Mr. John Vanas, President of the company for his help.

“The Euclid Heat Treating Company was established in 1946 in a garage building at 1408 E. 222nd St. with salt furnaces and open fired furnaces. Since our inception we have expanded to include endothermic atmosphere furnaces, an entire building devoted to induction hardening, an array of vacuum furnaces including a vacuum oil quench and two 10 bar vacuum furnaces, pit furnaces, nitriding equipment and much more.

Where We Are Today; In 2008, The Euclid Heat Treating Company embarked on an expansion of our Induction Division. To facilitate this expansion, we relocated and expanded our offices and training facility to a neighboring building at 1340 E. 222nd St. This allowed us to tear down existing offices that were built into the production area of our Induction facility. We gained 2,000 square feet of additional space. In addition to expanding floor space, newly purchased induction equipment includes a new dual scanner with a 150 KW 3- 10 KC power source and a 150 KW 3-10 KC power source for a multiple use station. A 300KW 3-10 KC Tocco power source unit was installed to replace one of our original motor generator power sources. Other new services we started to provide include Intensive Quenching, eddy current inspection, dimensional inspection and custom packaging and shipping. The continual investment in new equipment and technologies will help The Euclid Heat Treating Company maintain its position as the most diversified commercial heat treating company in Northeastern Ohio.”

Our regular readers will be well aware that we are in the process of compiling our list of the “50 Largest Commercial Heat Treater in North America” (Our 2020 list of the 30 largest can be found at Largest North American Commercial Heat Treats 2020 | The Monty). To this end “The Monty Heat Treat News” team has been speaking with commercial heat treaters around the continent and one that we spoke with is a company which has always fascinated us, Zion Industries based in Ohio Induction Heat Treating (zioninduction.com) The reason we have always been fascinated by the company is that it is part of a very small, select group commercial heat treaters who focus almost solely on Induction heat treating. Zion is a family owned company with 3 locations in the US, Ohio, North Carolina and Michigan. While we are not sure at this point whether the company will make our list we can say that it is a very substantial heat treater and the owner and President of the company, Mr. Bob Puls is a very open, forthcoming individual and we thank him for his assistance.

“Zion Industries is an induction heat treating company that has been an industry leader since its founding in 1977. We provide high quality both in heat treating services and handling equipment for induction heating applications. Zion, like so many others, strives for excellence in service and quality. What distinguishes us is our primary motivation: Excellence that brings glory to God. We care about our customers, and are committed to the services we provide. Our goal is to meet the outsourcing needs of the manufacturing industry by delivering unmatched customer service and enhancing value for all stakeholders. Today Zion’s 100+ employees serve customers nationwide with facilities in Ohio, North Carolina and Michigan. We also serve clients from Pennsylvania (PA), Indiana (IN), Tennessee (TN), and Kentucky (KY).”

Hardinge Inc., Elmira, NY, USA Invests in New Heat Treat Department

In Elmira, New York USA Hardinge Inc., a supplier of metal cutting solutions recently made the decision to bring manufacturing back from their facility in Asia and at the same time invest in a brand new heat treating department (the original press release which was provided by “The Monty Heat Treat News” in December of 2020 can be found further down). The long established company has always maintained an in house heat treating department based on salt, as you can see below the company is just in the process of investing $4 million USD in a brand new heat treat department;

“ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Hardinge, a tool manufacturing company, is hiring 50 employees for the company and 20 employees for their Elmira facility. Jenine Cleary, an HR director for Hardinge, discussed the local history of the company. “We started in 1890,” said Cleary. “So, we have been in business in the Elmira area for over 130 years and our facility here in Elmira has 350 employees.”

Cleary said they make machines for turning, milling, and grinding metal. They also manufacture the workholding that grips the metal while it is being worked on in their machines. They are hiring for various different positions including: machine operators, machinists, and programmer machinists. Craig Perry, director of operations, said it is an exciting time for the company. “We’ are at the front end of something good,” said Perry. “Not just from the COVID recovery and the general economic improvement that we’re seeing, but the migration of machines from overseas. Also, we’ve just invested, or are at the beginning of investing, $4 million to replace our heat-treating department.” Perry said they are also investing in new equipment, technology, and they are using more automation.”

December 2020 Press Release; “ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) — Hardinge Inc. announced it will shift the manufacturing of its milling and turning machining center solutions from the Taiwan plant to its location in Elmira. In a press release, the company said the transition “focuses on product development, supply chain and assembly operations for the company’s Americas and Europe turning and milling business into a single U.S. based location”.

Some of the products which will be made in Elmira include the Bridgeport XR Series of vertical machining centers and the Hardinge TALENT Series of turning products. Hardinge will also modernize the Elmira facility, which has been in operation since 1931, to include resources in new assembly capabilities as well as “state of the art heat-treat equipment”.

“We are very excited to make this move, as it brings the products closer to the customers we serve and leverages the many years of experience we have in Elmira,” said Chuck Dougherty, President & Co-CEO, Hardinge. “It also enables us to bring capabilities back to the US, which we are extremely proud to do.” The transition process has already begun and Hardinge expects to complete the start-up in Elmira during the first quarter of 2021. The product lines will be available through Hardinge’s distribution partners, Gosiger and Morris Group, Inc.

“Hardinge has been a key employer in the great state of New York for more than 89 years.  We continue this tradition and are also pleased to bring new manufacturing jobs back to the United States” said Ryan Levenson, Owner & Co-CEO, Hardinge and Managing Partner of Privet Fund Management LLC.  “Our strong local leadership and highly capable workforce form the foundation of our efforts to better support our customers by investing in our US machine manufacturing and innovation capabilities.” The Elmira plant also produces workholding products, Super-Precision CNC Lathes and the Bridgeport Knee Mills.”
