Back in March of this year medical supplier SITES Medical in Colombia City, Indiana, USA announced that they had ordered two new vacuum furnaces from furnace supplier Ipsen (the original press release can be found below). As you can see in this photo the second furnace is now arriving. It is rather interesting that Applied Thermal Technologies of Warsaw, IN the commercial heat treater who was working with SITES for their heat treating requirements actively got involved with helping the firm set up their heat treat department-this it not an everyday occurrence and very much to the credit of the company.
Applied Thermal is one of the largest commercial heat treaters in North America, find out where they are ranked by “The Monty Heat Treat News” https://themonty.com/project/5

This expansion is on the heels of another plant acquisition in the nearby city of West Allis, which was finalized earlier this year. The West Allis plant has three bays that provide over 150,000 square feet of manufacturing space, a combined 400-ton crane capacity and a specialty stainless steel bay.
“Many of our customers serve critical industries and are seeing historically high demand. HeatTek has committed to support them,” explains Jason Plowman, President of HeatTek. “Because of our equipment’s large size, floor space is an important asset, so investing in new facilities is essential.”
HeatTek’s original location will remain home to its headquarters offices, R&D lab and over 70,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Plowman summaries, “The recent expansion has tripled our capacity and optimized our manufacturing process so we can support these crucial industries.”
In 2000, some of the brightest minds in the oven and heat-treating industry combined hundreds of years of experience to form HeatTek. The goal was simple – provide the highest quality equipment and back it with superior customer service and on-site support. To this day, HeatTek’s “Never Settle” commitment ensures customers remain as profitable and efficient as possible.”

This week “The Monty Heat Treat News” had the opportunity to visit a number of a captive and commercial heat treaters in New York State, USA, which provided the opportunity to see how they had weathered the turmoil of the past 18 months.
Rochester Steel Treating Works in Rochester, NY is a family owned commercial heat treat and one of the oldest in North America having been founded in 1932 http://rstwinc.com/ We would classify this firm as a slightly larger than average shop in terms of sales and a “full service” facility in that their equipment includes batch IQ furnaces, vacuum hardening and tempering furnaces, induction heat treat systems and several other technologies.
Perhaps because the company specializes in smaller volumes of work from a wide variety of industries Rochester has survived the past 18 months just fine and the company has continued to grow and prosper with a steady if not growing workforce.
This photo which was taken December 9th in RST’s vacuum department shows part of the team responsible this continuing success story, from the left: Johnny D’Aprile Vacuum Operator, Greg Schledorn Maintenance Lead, Anthony Beaman Vacuum Operator and Nick O’Neil Production Coordinator.

Down in Conroe, Texas, USA oil field giant and captive heat treater Halliburton shut down their substantial in house heat treat department and sold off all of the equipment. The equipment includes a number of AFC-Holcroft batch IQ furnaces and associated equipment and it all ended up in the hands of a used equipment dealer who will be marketing it in the coming months. The photos below give a very basic idea about what it looks like.

“We are thrilled to be an ongoing partner in this customer’s growth,” said Piotr Zawistowski, Managing Director of SECO/VACUUM. “We know they have multiple competitive options for their vacuum heat treat equipment, so we take nothing for granted, and work hard to earn their business every step of the way. Ongoing awards like this suggest we’re doing a lot of things right.”
5th and 6th Vector tempering furnace for the same customer; Vector®, SECO/WARWICK’s single chamber horizontal vacuum furnace, is loaded with capabilities. With hundreds of systems installed worldwide, SECO/WARWICK Group’s vacuum furnaces have a proven record of meeting and exceeding performance expectations.
The two horizontal, front-loading furnaces are designed with an all-metal hot zone for clean vacuum processing. As with the earlier furnaces, the new furnace includes convection fans and a pressurized gas quench for rapid cooling.
Vector is Perfect for the Machine Tool Industry. Vector single-chamber vacuum heat treating furnaces are the ideal solution for machine and cutting tool manufacturers. It can be provided with curved graphite elements or an all-metal hot zone and can be used for most standard hardening, tempering, annealing, solution heat treating, brazing and sintering applications, as well as low pressure carburizing. Vector produces clean, uniform, high-quality parts with repeatable accuracy.

I don’t believe I am overstating it when I make the unconditional statement that the global heat treatment industry is seeing unprecedented challenges and changes these days. We all know the root cause, disruptions caused by the COVID 19 pandemic and we see on a daily basis how it has effected the worldwide supply chain. There can be no better example of this than the auto industry and the “chip” shortage which has caused a dramatic slowdown in vehicle production (“The Monty Heat Treat News” has covered this topic in the past, an article entitled “Automotive Slow Down to Significantly Hurt Captive & Commercial Heat Treaters” can be found at Automotive Slow Down to Significantly Hurt Captive & Commercial Heat Treaters | The Monty).
So what are these supply chain issues and how have they challenged the industry in terms of pricing and deliveries? We have spoken with several suppliers to the industry about this topic and this includes Mr. David Howard, Sales Manager of Codere Furnaces of Switzerland.
Also from September 2021 our prices have increased as a result of this domino effect from our long-term partners. Our customers have treated this news with mixed reactions however at the end of the day these issues also apply to them and generally can be understood from their side.
The entire increase in costs suffered is not fully considered here, and substantial deviations can be observed depending on the components. We nevertheless are bullish & feel these circumstances will relax in the future and we are working continuously on measures to improve our efficiency/ response. David Howard, Codere Furnaces”
