“A Toronto Canada-based manufacturer of flight-critical helicopter masts, turbine shafts, engine thrust links and safety critical nuclear components has ordered a new vacuum tempering/gas nitriding furnace from SECO/VACUUM, a SECO/WARWICK Group company. The partner will use the new furnace for nitriding and nitrocarburizing and can process loads up to 63″ diameter x 175″ deep with a load capacity of 13,200-lbs. The customer is adding new heat treating capabilities to handle larger loads and configurations as well as increased production capacity.

SECO/VACUUM’s retort nitriding furnaces achieve optimum results by using uniform high convection heating, precision nitriding potential and ammonia control, along with vacuum purging to reduce operating costs to process a variety of metals. The proprietary ZeroFlow® control technology uses only ammonia as a process gas thereby reducing gas usage and gas emissions. SECO/VACUUM’s Manager Director, Peter Zawistowski, said, “We are very pleased to collaborate with this precision manufacturer to enable new state-of-the-art nitriding and nitrocarburizing capabilities in their Canadian facility. The ZeroFlow® pit retort furnace with vacuum purge incorporates a unique process developed by SECO/WARWICK to enable precision nitriding at lower cost and with lower emissions than legacy technologies.”

The new pit nitriding furnace is significantly larger than SECO/VACUUM’s standard maximum size. At 175″ deep, it’s nearly 80% deeper than the standard 98″ furnace. With a working temperature range of 300° – 1,300°F (150° – 700°C) and temperature uniformity of +/-5°, the furnace boasts the lowest ammonia consumption in the industry and includes a burn-off stack to neutralize gas emissions from the system, making it the most environmentally responsible nitriding furnace in the industry. Component manufacturers and in-house heat treating departments in aerospace and land-based turbine markets frequently process long, oversized, dense power transmission components, and SECO/VACUUM’s Pit Nitriding furnace with vacuum purge is the modern option for achieving precision nitriding with the lowest emissions possible.”

In Reynoldsville, PA, USA we find powdered metal company Sintergy Inc.: “Sintergy, Inc. is a world-class manufacturer of custom-engineered, powder metal components. We have the capability of producing a wide range of Powder Metal (P/M) Components, with molding capabilities from 20 to 750-ton presses. These components are used by a wide range of manufacturing industries, such as Agricultural Equipment, Automotive, Business Machines, Consumer Products, Electronics, Hand & Power Tools, Lawn & Garden, Small & Large Appliances, etc.”

The firm has a reasonably large sintering department which includes a total of 5 mesh belt sintering furnaces and support equipment. We mention the company today as they very recently appointed a new Sintering Manager, Mr. Roy Seltzer who has had a long career in the heat treatment industry. Roy spent over 20 years with commercial heat treater Advanced Heat Treating Inc., in PA as plant manager before a short stint as Plant Manager at Paulo in Kansas City, Missouri. We searched through our records and found this related press release which Sintergy issued back in September 2020.

“September 2020 POST. Abbott Furnace Installs & Commissions and Endo Generator; St. Mary’s, PA:  Abbott Furnace Company has recently designed, manufactured and installed a 6,000 SCFH Endothermic Gas Generator at Sintergy Inc. in Reynoldsville, PA. The design of the Abbott SP-6000 generator is a modular concept with each module producing up to 6000scfh of endothermic gas. This generator brings an innovative retort design that allows a single retort to produce endo gas at this rate without sacrificing gas quality and maintaining 6:1 turndown ratio.

The team at Sintergy is pleased with the level of control that the new system gives them and said that they were only seeing ±1°F in dewpoint variation from setpoint. Abbott has included all the improvements you would expect to see in new equipment today including state of the art controls with Allen Bradley PLC, data logging, dewpoint and methane sensors and updated gas safety system.”

Earlier this year “The Monty Heat Treat News” had an exclusive article about a multi-million dollar order for new furnaces, quite possibly the largest new furnace order in North America in 2021. As a follow up to that article we have received this press release from one of the suppliers, SECO/WARWICK explaining what their involvement in the project is-to which we would have to say congratulations on a very impressive order.

We can add that the customer is a Canadian based supplier of extrusion dies with locations around the world and that the total furnace order involved more than one supplier due to different technologies. We can also add that at least in the case of the Canadian division it has been operating fluidized bed furnaces for as long as we can remember-which goes back quite some time now.

A principal maker of tooling for the aluminum extrusion industry with operations in North and South America has pulled the trigger on a massive overhaul to its heat treating operations in three locations, replacing much of its legacy equipment with modern day technology. The customer has committed a multi-million dollar purchase to modernize heat treating operations in its Canada, USA and Mexico plants.

The order consists of four (4) Vector® single chamber gas quench vacuum furnaces, six (6) tempering furnaces, and one (1) ZeroFlow® pit-type gas nitriding furnace. The Mexico plant will benefit from brand new heat treating capacity, while the USA and Canada plants will be augmented with new vacuum heat treating technology, in one case replacing its legacy fluidized bed operations with 21st century technology.  Each site will also receive various upgrades to their water cooling and gas distribution systems with a full turnkey system installation to wrap things up.

“This is a big deal for the customer. They’ll benefit from a complete modernization of their heat treatment capabilities across all of North America, with clean, efficient vacuum heat treatment technologies. It’s a bigger deal for vacuum heat treating as a whole. It proves we’ve made great strides in the industry to convert legacy atmosphere users into vacuum technology believers. And it’s the biggest deal that we at SECO/VACUUM have made with a single customer since we began our division in 2017. We are delighted to partner with this customer in a 21st century operational upgrade to their heat treatment capabilities across multiple plants. I am also very proud of our SECO/VISORY solutions team, who worked hand-in-hand with the customer to solve their process challenges collaboratively.” Said Peter Zawistowski, Managing Director of SECO/VACUUM.

The customer recognized that reliance on older gas-fired atmosphere combustion technology could not continue to move its mission forward. With more advanced vacuum heat treat technologies than any other manufacturer in the world, SECO/VACUUM was able to offer a total, comprehensive solution comprising multiple furnaces in multiple configurations to meet their needs for a clean, efficient future.

Tool and die manufacturers around the world are recognizing the unequivocal value of upgrading their operations with vacuum heat treatment technologies, and SECO/VACUUM makes it possible to source all-vacuum technologies from a single integrated supplier. In addition to basic environmental improvements – both in the plant and to the planet as a whole – tooling makers are recognizing the advantages of vacuum furnace technologies in increased productivity, more consistent tooling quality and performance, and savings to their bottom line.
