Following a full five-day audit, ThermoFusion, Hayward, California, has been awarded GE Aviation approval for vacuum heat treating and hardness testing. ThermoFusion continues to make gains in the Aerospace Market with earning an initial NADCAP approval in 2019, Honeywell approval in 2020, and NADCAP 18-month merit status in 2021, all while expanding scope. ThermoFusion’s streak of approvals speaks to the strength and commitment of their entire team.

Recently we announced that automotive transmission parts maker Bucyrus Precision Tech in Bucyrus, Ohio, USA was closed and that all the equipment including the very substantial in house heat treatment department would be going to auction-as an update to this story we can tell you that bidding closes the end of next week, February 17 to be exact. Our interest of course lies in the heat treat equipment which includes a total of 16 normalizing and carburizing furnaces, which means at one point in time that this was one of the larger captive heat treats in all of Ohio, and Ohio as we know includes a number of very large in captive heat treats. Will the furnaces attract much attention at auction-“The Monty Heat Treat News” doubts it, mainly for the design and the fact that the manufacturer of the equipment is not well known in North America in spite of the fact that they have hundreds of systems installed in North America-let us explain.
Dowa furnace design also generally differs from what North American furnaces builders supply in that in most cases they have a single row pusher design, quite unlike the standard for North Americans which is an “in/out” batch IQ design. So while the equipment is relatively new, an advanced design and appears to be in good shape we would not expect there to be a great deal of interest at auction.
Rather interesting that one of the larger install bases in North America for furnaces belongs to a company that most North American heat treaters are not familiar with.
On a final note we can say that Dowa is one of the largest commercial heat treaters in the world and the photo below shows one of their completely automated facilities in Japan as “The Monty Heat Treat News” saw it a few years ago.

Since 1943 Hi TechMetal Group (HTG) has been one of the largest commercial heat treaters in the Ohio, USA area. The firm has 4 locations in Ohio which offer Induction Hardening, Brazing, Vacuum Hardening and Brazing amongst other processes. President is Mr. Cole Coe, son in law of the founder Mr. Terry Profugi.

Gasbarre Thermal Processing Systems is excited to announce the shipment of a 60” wide x 90” deep x 30” tall atmosphere box sintering furnace. The batch sintering furnace will be installed at Mueller Brass Co., a major supplier of brass rod and forgings in the United States. The box furnace is designed with a maximum operating temperature of 1650°F, a capacity of 14,000 pounds, and utilizes a nitrogen atmosphere. The system incorporates an Allen-Bradley PLC with SSi 9130 control and 12.1” HMI display. The indirect fired gas heating system incorporates parallel positioning control for efficiency and process flexibility. An integrated oxygen analyzer ensures proper furnace environment prior to heating. The accelerated gas cooling system improves floor–to–floor cycle time for the customer’s demanding production needs. We move to France today where we see that the second largest commercial heat treater in the country, Thermi-Lyon Groupe is adding an Ipsen 1200 kg capacity vacuum furnace to one of their locations. The Sales Manager for Thermi-Lyon, Mr. Bernard Salvi had this to say to “The Monty Heat Treat News“; “Despite the Covid pandemic and the ongoing chip shortage business is not bad, as a matter of fact it is pretty good. Here at Thermi-Lyon we work with a number of different industries and while some of them are slower than normal, others continue to grow. Because of this we added a new vacuum furnace to our Thermi-Picardie location (Paris area).”

Recently the firm decided it was time to upgrade and enlarge their facilities and the final product is quite impressive as can be seen in these pictures. This represents an investment of over $1 million USD and the space now includes a new lab, floor shop assembly and inspection space, a new 12-15 person conference room, and two new offices. Our first thought when looking at these pictures is that it would be a shame to install any oil quenching furnaces into such a clean, bright environment.
Rather reminds us of a shop in Germany by the name of Werz that “The Monty Heat Treat News” team visited a little while back in that it also was immaculately clean.

Aalberts Surface Technologies, one of the largest commercial heat treaters in Europe and North America recently invested in additional equipment for their Dzierżoniów, Poland plant. “The Monty Heat Treat News” had the privilege of visiting this facility a few years back at which point we met with the plant manager, a top notch fellow by the name of Bart Olejnik. Bart is quoted in this press release and now has the very impressive title of Managing Director, Aalberts Surface Technologies. In this photo we see Bart along with Gord Montgomery of “The Monty”.
Included is a third hardening furnace, tempering furnace, and an endothermic atmosphere generator as well as loading and unloading devices along with the auxiliary infrastructure. “This contract covers a main AFT type atmosphere furnace, intended for carburizing, hardening, nitrocarburizing and annealing processes,” explained Piotr Skarbiński, Vice-President, Business Segment Atmosphere Furnaces, SECO/WARWICK Group. “The furnace is perfect for manufacturing processes for various transmission components, enabling the use of both conventional load arrangements with modular accessories (mesh, grids or “cross-bars”) as well as hardening baskets”
Aalberts Surface Technologies is a global company with more than 80 years of experience, operating in more than 70 countries. The Dzierżoniów plant was established in 2014 and is one of the most modern commercial hardening plants in the region. They are a supplier primarily for the automotive industry, but also for the wide machinery industry.
