Aerospace provider Collins Aerospace has just landed an order from Boeing to provide boltless wheels and carbon brakes for F-15EX aircraft for the US Air Force. Collins has over 30 locations around the US a number of which include in house heat treating departments. Earlier this year one of their locations installed 2 new Nitrex gas nitriding systems to replace smaller, older furnaces.
“Collins Aerospace announces its selection by Boeing to provide boltless wheels and carbon brakes for lots one through three on the F-15EX aircraft in production for the U.S. Air Force. Collins’ equipment replaces the platform’s legacy wheels and brakes on the Boeing production line.
Collins has worked closely with the U.S. Air Force on the Wheel and Brake System Improvement (WBSI) program to design, develop, and qualify the F-15 wheels and brakes while achieving installation approval from Boeing for the F-15C/D and F-15E variant aircraft. After five years of operations, Collins’ wheels and brakes continue to meet or exceed all U.S. Air Force performance
standards for the WBSI program. Collins set out to drive down the lifecycle cost over the lifespan of the aircraft while increasing the longevity of the wheel and carbon brakes.”

To the upsetting announcement below we can add that Peter was tremendously well known in the European powdered metal industry, in particular at the furnace suppliers who supply the PM furnaces.
“It is with much sadness that we report the death of Peter Vervoort who passed away on Sunday, August 7, following a fatal cycling accident. He was 54. Peter was known to many in the Powder Metallurgy industry having spent the majority of his career working in the furnace sector. He was a regular at PM events, always approachable and keen to share his knowledge and advice.
Born in 1967 in Rozenburg, the Netherlands, Peter studied Materials Science and Engineering at the Technical University Delft. On completing his degree, he remained at TU Delft as an Associate Scientist, working in the field of Metal Injection Moulding. In 1996 he joined Cremer Thermoprozessanlagen GmbH, where he was Assistant General Manager. In 2002 he moved to Elino Industrie-Ofenbau as head of Powder Metallurgy processing, before advancing to Group R&D Manager in 2010.
From 2011 to 2013, Peter ran the Metal Injection Moulding department at ITB Precisietechniek B.V., before joining Eisenmann Thermal Solutions GmbH in 2013 as VP Process Development. When Eisenmann was acquired by Korea’s Onejoon in 2020, Peter remained at the company as VP Global Technology. Peter was a keen cyclist and runner, with a passion for the outdoors. He leaves a wife and four children. He will be sadly missed by all his family, friends and colleagues.”

You can certainly be forgiven if you don’t recognize the name “American Heat Treat Alabama” since we have yet to see the name in print. If you recall last week we had a note about a very recent acquisition within the heat treat industry involving a commercial heat treat facility in Anniston, Alabama, USA which was part of Rex Heat Treat, one of the largest commercial heat treaters in North America. We can now say that Greg Vierra is a Principle in American Industries Group which acquired the Rex Heat Treat plant in Anniston, Alabama.
Odd part of this story is that there is a real debate about who bought this plant. Our understanding is that it was bought by another commercial heat treater in the southeast, however there appears to be some confusion about this. We will keep you updated.

“Tampa, FL / PEMCO Conversions – Airborne Maintenance and Engineering Services: DELTA H® TECHNOLOGIES, LLC recently commissioned a state-of-the-art DCAHT® system for heat treating aviation grade aluminum. The new system was a modern replacement of an original DELTA H DCAHT furnace installed and in service since 2011 at PEMCO located at Tampa International Airport. The system features secure and tamperproof batch records, soak time and quench delay recorded to within 1/10 of a second, as well as full documentation of work order / tail number, before / after condition, part name and quantity, and other information. Extensive training was involved to not only for over a dozen operators but also many QC personnel and two “trainers” qualified to train other operators. Additional training was provided to personnel responsible for maintaining pyrometry records to assure compliance to AMS2750G.
The installed system features a certified TUS volume of 30” wide, 16 inches high, 72 inches deep, with an upper chamber convection oven operable to 500°F, and a lower chamber convection furnace capable of 1200°F. In addition to aluminum, the system can be used for PH stainless steel aging, as well as titanium and ferrous alloy processes. Both chambers qualified as Class 1, but were certified as Class 2 for aluminum applications. Honeywell controls and recorders are featured and include remote computer control, data entry and process monitoring.

As mentioned yesterday, 2022 has brought very few acquisitions within the North American commercial heat treating industry. As a matter of fact we know of only two this year, the first involved Thermal Process Holdings acquiring Rockford Heat Treat earlier this year, the second just a week ago involved Solar Atmospheres buying Vac-Met. We can now mention a third which happened just a few weeks ago in the US Southeast. Our understanding is that Rex Heat Treat sold their facility in Anniston, Alabama just a few short weeks ago. This particular location is what we would describe as a medium sized facility which features 3 batch IQ austempering furnaces and a pusher line along with related equipment.

“Hubbard-Hall adds depth to the Technical Department with the addition of Jameson Grout. He will utilize his 10 years of experience and passion for being tank-side in the metal finishing industry to help customers in the New England region solve their toughest problems.
Prior to joining Hubbard-Hall, Grout worked his way up the plating lines, from Lab Technician to Plating Manager and eventually, Production Manager. In addition to plating, he has experience with aluminum finishing, black oxide, phosphating, nickel, copper, and gold plating, as well as electropolishing and electroless nickel.
“I have worked on both sides of the metal finishing coin, as a vendor and manufacturer. I hope to marry these experiences and provide comprehensive support to our customers. I love this corner of American manufacturing, and I am proud to be a part of its future,” stated Grout.
He will report to Product Manager, Jason Potts who stated, “I am excited for our customers to meet Jameson and engage with his expertise and enthusiasm.”
Grout holds a Bachelor of Science from Norwich University and CEF-1 Certification through the National Association for Surface Finishing.”
