SBS Corporation has delivered two identical 35’ L x 8’ W x 5.5’ H, 7 fan units to a customer located in the North East.  These monster heat exchangers have a dry weight of 16,000 lbs and are capable of heat rejection up to 5 million BTU/hr. We are now attending the HK 22 heat treatment show in Cologne, Germany and the burning question on everybody’s lips is; what will attendance be like? We spoke with the organizer of the event, Ms. Sonja Mueller of AWT and she stated that to date there are roughly 1500 registered attendees and they are optimistic this will increase to 2500, very respectable indeed!

On October 2nd, 2002, a mere twenty years ago, William R. Jones re-entered the vacuum furnace manufacturing business with the birth of Solar Manufacturing, Inc. Solar Mfg joined the Solar Atmospheres Family of Companies! We started out at 164 Keystone Drive in Telford, PA with about 7,500 SF of shop space and just 7 full-time employees. Five of those 7 original employees are still employed with a Solar Company today: Faye Loughridge, Andy Minnig, Tom Smith, Bob Wagner, and me. Faye, Andy, and Bob continued with Magnetic Specialties, Inc. when it was formed as a separate entity under Mike Afflerbach’s leadership. Tom and I continued with Solar Mfg.

Today, under Trevor Jones’ leadership, Solar Mfg has grown to 50 employees producing about 15-20 furnaces annually in a beautiful, new $10 million, 57,500 SF plant in Sellersville, PA designed specifically to build vacuum furnaces. It is hard to believe that two decades have passed. Nearly 300 furnaces and numerous replacement hot zones have been successfully placed into operation in North America and around the world.

Our mission for the future is simple: continue to carry on the vision of WRJ by advancing vacuum furnace technology not just for Solar Atmospheres to assist with their growth and leadership in commercial heat treating, but also for the general heat processing industry as well.

UK, October 2022 – Leybold UK, based in Chessington, UK, has made it onto the shortlist for the Composites UK 2022 Industry Awards in the Social Impact category. The industry association aims to recognise those companies whose results improve people’s lives and support society. The award honours companies active in the composites industry across the UK.

Commitment to inclusion and well-being. This year’s Industry Award in the Social Impact category is open to companies that have made a special commitment to diversity, inclusion and the mental health and wellbeing of their employees. Ian Dorman, General Manager Leybold UK, says: “To be nominated in a category that recognises our efforts in these areas in particular means a lot to the team and is a very important recognition if our well-being initiatives.”

Inclusive welcome culture. “The selection alone recognises our commitment towards sustainable working practices,” HR Manager Sarah Cogswell emphasises, “We support our employees by fostering an inclusive culture where they are welcome to bring their whole personality to work.” The Industry Award in the category Social Impact is therefore also a great incentive for Leybold UK to consistently continue on this path.

Announcement of the winners on 2 November 2022. The winners of the award will be announced at the Awards Dinner at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham on 2 November 2022. The event will coincide with the Advanced Engineering Show 2022 at the neighbouring Birmingham NEC, where Leybold UK will be exhibiting. The Leybold team looks forward to welcoming trade visitors to the Birmingham NEC on stand Q130.

Vacuum systems are used in a wide range of processes. Leybold designs and manufactures vacuum pumps, components and systems that create the necessary production conditions for the industrial manufacture of semiconductors, data carriers, displays, coated architectural glass and solar cells. Vacuum systems are used among in the refinement of steel and the processing and packaging of food. Vacuum is also indispensable for the operation of mass spectrometers and electron microscopes as well as in almost all areas of modern research and development.

Effective October 10, 2022 long time Managing Director of German furnace builder IVA Schmetz, Mr. Heinrich Peter Lankes is no longer with the company. According to information we received on October 10 this is effective immediately. Odd timing for this announcement to be issued just as the heat treatment show in Cologne, Germany is about to start. The week Starting October 10 2022, Gord Montgomery of “The Monty Heat Treat News” will be visiting a number of captive and commercial heat treaters around The Netherlands and Germany in addition to attending the HK22 Heat Treatment exhibition in Cologne, Germany.

Our first visit was to a company which used to be part of the “TEKFOR Group” before being acquired by AAM (American Axle & Manufacturing) just a few months ago. It now goes under the name “Metal Forming” and as such is part of one of the largest captive heat treaters in the world ‘AAM’.

This manufacturer of truck components has an in house heat treatment department consisting entirely of furnaces dedicated to annealing. The original department (shown in one of these photos) shows a number of older pit annealing furnaces which are all still in use.

The latest addition is a “Rohde” two position “bell” style annealing furnace which has been in use for just under 1 year. The furnace is capable of processing 25 tons of products per day at 700C with a nitrogen atmosphere.

While the heat treat department does not compare in size to others which can found at various AAM facilities around the globe (Poland and Mexico come to mind), it is clean, neat, well organized and as you can see at least one of the furnaces is new with the others in very nice operating condition.

In June of 2018 “The Monty Heat Treat News” had the priviledge of visiting a brand new heat treat in Meadville, PA, USA a heat treat which focuces on laser heat treating. Fascinating process and we were suitably impressed and promptly forgot all about it. Well it appears that that there is growing interest in laser hardening, so much so that the company has just announced the opening of a new location in Grand Rapids, MI., USA. Read on for our original posting and the new announcment which was just issued

“OCTOBER 7,2022; A new manufacturing company plans to host an open house next week. Laser Hard Inc. will host an open house from 2-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at its facility, 2766 Three Mile Road in Grand Rapids. Laser Hard will demonstrate its laser hardening technology, which it claims is the only one of its kind in the U.S. The company said the technology is useful for a variety of industries, including automotive, mining, aerospace and medical.

“Many companies are requesting this process in place of other conventional methods that introduce a greater risk of cracking and distortion,” the company said. The technology offers cost reduction and reduced down time abilities, according to Laser Hard. Laser Hard is a partnership between Peters’ Heat Treating Inc. and Phoenix Laser Solutions, both headquartered in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Meadville also is home to the first Laser Hard location.”

“JUNE 21, 2018; Laser Hard Inc., a partnership between commercial heat treater Peters’ Heat Treating and laser welder Phoenix Laser Solutions, invested in a mobile robot designed for targeted laser hardening and tempering of metal surfaces. The company, which held an open house at its Meadville, Pa., headquarters June 20, says it is the first production system of its kind in the United States.

The robot combines the latest innovations in laser technology and optical pyrometry and utilizes a six-axis robotic arm that articulates with a two-axis tiltable rotary table. This movement control provides the capability to project the laser beam in free 3D movements precisely following contours of parts with complex geometries.

The laser heat-treating processes include hardening, tempering and annealing. They deliver the same properties as conventional heat treating, but with the added benefits of accuracy and adaptability to workpiece geometry. The digitally controlled laser heat source elevates temperature for heat treating by localizing energy directly to the required work area, resulting in the following benefits:

Our very information poll of exhibitors and visitors alike indicates that the show was a strong success, an opinion which we concur with. We offer this final pictures from the show.

Whether you agree or disagree that reducing your carbon footprint is an important issue or not these days is largely a mute point as it is a topic which keeps coming up more and more often. So with great interest we ran across an idea presented at the FNA heat treatment show this past week. Controls company SSi of Cincinatti has a product called an “AutoGen” which matches the output of an endothermic generator with the demand from the furnaces ensuring that no natural gas is wasted. With rising energy pricing its really a “no brainer” that the system makes an enormous amount of financial sense and this can be easily be proved by using the handy/dandy AutoGen Payback calculator which can be found at  AutoGen Payback (supersystems.com)  The really cool part of the calculator and the point of this news iem is that it will also tell you how much your carbon footprint has been reduced by the natural gas reduction, I believe it will also even tell you how many trees this equates to. If your firm has a keen interest in reducing their carbon footprint this is a very easy way of coming up with some hard figures very quickly.
