“The Monty Heat Treat News” has also learned that recently the company received two very nice orders in the USA. Both orders were for large ModulTherm vacuum carburizing systems and both are destined for automotive companies in the US.
Our host, Dr. Klaus Löser, Senior Vice President, R&D and Process Development, ALD Vacuum Technologies GmbH showed us that ALD is more, far more than simply a supplier of heat treatment furnaces. Klaus very kindly provided us with this summary of the company itself, as well as an explanation about the various pieces of equipment on the floor. “ALD moved out of the center of Hanau, Germany to a new location in the Fraunhofer Science Park in Hanau in 2016 where we have approximately 450 employees. Since that time ALD has step-by-step enlarged this new facility. The last step was done in 2019, when a new research and development center was erected. It consists of an office area (2,500m2) hosting ALD´s research department and a 2,000m2 lab area, which is ALD´s research and development center where several metallurgical and heat treatment systems are installed.
The furnaces in the laboratory are not lab size but industrial size furnaces allowing us to do production size tests and process development together with our customers or industrial and university partners. The systems are:
- An EB-melting furnace with 600 kW max. EB-gun power used for melting of reactive and refractory alloys like Titanium, Zirconium, Tantalum, Molybdenum, Tungsten, Niobium etc, up to temperatures of more than 3.000°C.
- A SyncroTherm® unit for vacuum hardening/casehardening of components for the automotive industry including gas quenching. This machine is designed for one-piece flow or small batch production offering highest quality especially with respect to distortion. ALD is equipped with 3D geometry measuring equipment allowing us to do distortion analysis and optimization very fast and effective.
- A ModulTherm® system is about to be installed comprising of 2 treatment chambers offering 20 bar quenching capability with Nitrogen or Helium. The system will be used for customer trials but also for internal and national/European R&D projects.
- Newest system (EBuild®850) is going to be the world´s largest Additive Manufacturing system working with EB-PBF (Electron beam powder bed fusion) process. Focus for this machine will include aerospace and energy industry. The build area is 850 x 850 x 1000 mm3 (L x W x H) and will for the first time allow to produce additive manufactured turbine components on an industrial scale. The materials to be handled range from Titanium, Titanium-alloys, Titanium-Aluminides, Ni-base-alloys and all kind of reactive and refractory alloys. ALD is now in a unique position to offer systems for the complete product production-chain including melting, re-melting, powder atomization, additive manufacturing and final heat treatment.

Bryan is a 2018 MTI YES program graduate, was elected Heat Treat Today’s 40 under 40 class of 2020, and is a member of ASM International. Peter Gundel holds a M.Sc. degree and has a Ph.D. from ATV (Academy of Technical Sciences) and is recognized for his more than 35 years working with materials and heat treatment in Denmark, the Nordic countries and Germany. Before joining Expanite, Peter Gundel worked several years as chief metallurgist at Bodycote with technical sales and been a regular lecturer and examiner at DTU within materials science. Solar Manufacturing Inc. has designed and installed an automatic disconnect switch into a production car bottom vacuum furnace at Solar Atmospheres in Souderton, Pa. The automatic disconnect switch saves a tremendous amount of time by eliminating the labor-intensive manual maneuver of disconnecting and then re-connecting the power terminal bars at each end of the car bottom on each production run. The switch is rated for 1,000 amps, 50V AC per pole, and the switches are installed at each end of the hot zone. Not only have the disconnect switches performed as well as expected since installation, but they also have improved production.

An integral part of the global heat treatment industry are the suppliers who provide the parts which keep furnaces operating, this includes everything from controls to burners, refractory, quench oil, cooling systems and high temperature alloy parts. Alloy includes cast furnace parts such as base trays, fixtures, radiant tubes, pusher heads-it is a long list. Fabricated components include muffles, retorts, baskets-the lines blur as many alloy components can be either “fabricated” or “cast”, today we look at a very substantial alloy fabricater in Germany, W. The firm was founded in 1873 and has 4 locations around the country with the headquarters in Altena, Germany which is the facility “The Monty Heat Treat News” visited this past Thursday. Pilling supplies kettles and crucibles for the hot dip galvanizing industry while also offering fabrications for the die casting, wire and heat treatment industries-our interest as always is focused on the heat treating industry.
The roughly 150 employees of the company have supplied products around the world, while the focus is on Europe orders from North and South America are not uncommon. This is largely because Pilling’s ability to handle very large parts puts them in a small, select group. During our meeting it became clear that fabrications up to 18’ in diameter X 60’ long (6 meters X 20 meters) would not pose a problem.

Roger Joseph Fabian, 82, of Wethersfield, beloved husband for 58 years of the late Gail Clark Fabian, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, after a brief illness. Born in Elmsford, NY on July 16, 1940, he was the son of the late Renato John Fabian and Anna Fabian. Roger and Gail were married in 1964, lived the majority of their lives in Wethersfield and enjoyed their weekends in Guilford.
Roger received his B.S. in metallurgical engineering in 1962 and his MBA in 1980 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He began his career with Lindberg Corporation in 1962 as a plant manager at Lindberg’s Boston Division, and in 1964 transferred to the Berlin Division, where he was named chief metallurgist and quality control manager. He was promoted to division manager at Berlin in 1979 and named Vice President of Lindberg Heat Treating Company in 1992. When Lindberg was purchased by Bodycote Thermal Processing in 2001, Roger was named Eastern Region Sales Manager and finally retired in 2010 after 48 years.
Roger had many professional accomplishments, including President of ASM International, President of the ASM Heat Treating Society, an Affiliate Society of ASM International, and was a long-time member of both societies. He also served as a President for the Metal Treating Institute (MTI), and as Chairman of the ASM Technical Programming Board. He was instrumental in the development of the Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE) at Worcester Polytechnical Institute and served as director-at-large and industrial liaison.
As Roger would say, “fun takes planning” and he had plenty of fun over the years, golfing at the best golf courses around the world and always researching the next fishing trip. Whether it was bluefish or porgies there was always time for one more drift across North Reef with his daughters and granddaughters on the Jilly-Bee. Life is Short, Fish Hard. He traveled extensively with his lifelong friends from MTI, went to Aruba each year with Gail and he crossed off his bucket list African safari with his son-in-law, Bryan.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Poppi will be forever missed by his two daughters, Jill Fabian of Wethersfield and Beth Nesteriak, along with her husband Bryan of Seymour and their two adored daughters, Emma and Sara. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon Yates and her husband Richard, as well as many extended family members and friends.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, October 21 from 4-6 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of Christ, 250 Main Street, Wethersfield, with burial following in Village Cemetery. During the recent HK22 Heat Treat exhibition in Cologne, Germany which “The Monty Heat Treat News” attended, a common question was how long we have been publishing the monthly magazine “The Monty.com” and hosting the website “The Monty Heat Treat News“?
The answer which continues to amaze the entire team is that we started publishing the monthly magazine in 1996 and the website in 1997 which means that this year we are celebrating 26 years of “The Monty“.
Along the same lines the parent company of “The Monty“, heat treat representative firm WG Montgomery Ltd., was founded in 1969 by William G. Montgomery and it continues 53 years later which again astounds us. It has been a really fun ride so far and one which we plan to continue for at least another 53 years.

“The Monty Heat Treat News” was fortunate enough to be able to visit this week one of the 10 largest commercial heat treaters in Europe, Hanomag based in Hannover, Germany. https://themonty.com/articles/largest-european-commercial-heat-treaters/
Our visit this week took us to the headquarters in Hannover, a sprawling facility with almost 200 employees in a single location, which features numerous types of furnaces. Perhaps the pusher furnaces dedicated to auto parts is the largest department in the plant, however it might also be the multiple pit carburizing furnaces used for large gears. Having said that the furnaces dedicated to aluminum components might also cover the largest area, and let us not forget the nitriding department.
The bottom line is that this is a mammoth very impressive heat treating location. This is one of 10 Hanomag facilities, all in Germany except for one in Poland largely for aluminum processing and one in Austria. https://www.haertecenter.de/en/
