It is very seldom (well almost never) that we hear about heat treating in Peru so this press release about a new gas nitriding system being installed in Peru makes for interesting news.
To the best of our knowledge this is the only gas nitrider installed in the entire country, however we know from personal experience that a commercial heat treater in the country “Tratar Peru” does have plasma nitriding capabilities. In 2018 Gord Montgomery of “The Monty Heat Treat News” visited Tratar as you can see in two photos further down this page.
“voestalpine High Performance Metals del Perú recently added a state-of-the-art NITREX system for nitriding and nitrocarburizing a wide range of components made from high-performance steels. This new addition strengthens the company’s position as a leader in high-tech thermal and thermochemical processes on par with highly industrialized countries, expanding its capabilities to precisely meet the needs of industries such as mining, metal-mechanical, energy, plastic, sugar, among others.
Under the terms of the agreement, Nitrex will work closely with voestalpine High Performance Metals del Perú to help meet the needs of its customers through research and process development for a wide range of applications, materials, and markets.
“We are excited to bring these new heat treatment processes to the Peruvian market,” commented Arturo Garcia, Plant Manager, “because they offer an expansion of possibilities with processes ranging between 400-600°C (752-1112°F), which can be adapted to various low alloy steels and tool steels while respecting tempering limits. Depending on the type of application, deep layers with excellent white layer control, low roughness, and low microporosity can be achieved.”
The voestalpine High Performance Metals division specializes in high-performance materials and customer-specific services, including heat treatments, surface treatments, and additive manufacturing processes for the aerospace, automotive, consumer goods, oil and gas, and tooling industries.

Science-based targets provide a clearly-defined pathway for companies with ambitious climate goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proofing business growth. Targets are considered ‘science-based’ if they are in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to well-below 2°C above preindustrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
Bodycote, with over 165 facilities in 22 countries, commits to reduce its absolute scopes 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2030 from a 2019 base. The Mentor® vacuum furnace has stainless steel chamber, a work zone of 12” x 12” x 18” deep, and a maximum operating temperature of 2400°F with a workload capacity of 250 pounds. The furnace includes a VHS 6” diffusion pump for vacuum performance in the 10-6 Torr range, a high performance 7.5HP fan motor for internal gas quenching up to 15PSIG (2-bar), and the SolarVac® fully automated and programmable controls package with a Eurotherm digital recorder.

Over the course of the past few months we have had several press releases about one of the larger in house heat treaters in North America, Allied Locke in Dixon, Illinois. The firm is now sharing that their heat treat supervisor, Dan Cover is celebrating a very impressive milestone, 37 years working for the company. Dan can be seen below along with a photo of part of the batch IQ department.
In related news Allied has shared with “The Monty Heat Treat News” a number of photos of some of their recent additions which includes more batch IQ capacity and a third mesh belt furnace line. These will be upcoming.

As it turns out what your read was only part of the story, we can now add these further details;
In addition to the details provided last week we can also say that Allied will be investing in a controls system update for their batch IQ furnaces and generators which is being provided by SSi of Cincinnati, Ohio-hold on we are just getting started. Other projects include 2 small vacuum furnace additions and upgrades to their robotic induction heat treating equipment. We will also issue a correction, it would appear that the company will have 3 mesh belt furnace lines as opposed to 4. All in all an extremely impressive investment.

The firm has always considered heat treating to be a “core competency” and to that end they have continued to invest and expand their heat treat department, to the point that it is becoming one of the larger captive heat treaters in the US. Currently Allied has 6 batch IQ furnaces, each 36″ X 72″ X 36″, 3 Can Eng mesh belt furnace lines and related equipment including endothermic generators. As we speak a 4th Can Eng mesh belt line is being installed and plans include one more batch IQ line.
At the same time the company has recently installed what was described to us as an “amazing, new” metallurgical lab and is working towards CQI-9. So often heat treating is an afterthought in manufacturing firms and is relegated to that dark dirty area at the back of the plant. It makes our day at “The Monty Heat Treat News” to see that some companies rightfully understand the importance of heat treating-Allied Locke is certainly one of these.”

”Heat Treating Services Unlimited” (HTSU) of Simpsonville, SC, USA and their subsidiary “Heat Treat Depot” occupy a rather unique position in the heat treatment industry as “The Monty Heat Treat News” saw last week. HTSU launched their “Heat Treat Depot” facility back in 2020 when they claimed it was the first “one stop shop” in the heat treat industry. While they do maintain a very impressive inventory of new items such as brick and thermocouples to name a couple it is their used inventory which impresses us. Currently they have over 10,000 part numbers listed which represents over $2 million in inventory the large bulk of it being odd and unusual items which are hard to find anywhere else. Last week “The Monty Heat Treat News” was honored to be able to visit “The Knife Source” a manufacturer of machine knives for lumber, panel, wood chips and biomass processing companies. https://www.knifesource.com/ Located in Fountain Inn, SC, USA the company has used a tried and proven heat treating technique for a number of years.
Parts are heated in electrically heated box furnaces, air “quenched” while clamped and then tempered. The heat treat department consists of a number of box furnaces, all with updated SSi controls, clamps and a number of temper furnaces. Recently the company invested in two 36 X 72 X 36 Uni Draw tempers.
While the company was recently acquired the Halloran family who started the company continue to carry on the legacy. Todd, Jeff, Jay and Doug all share the responsibilities of running the company and are all very enthusiastic about what they are doing. We have several photos of the heat treating department including one which shows Kyle Favors of HTSU in Simpsonville, SC and Jeff Halloran, Process Development Engineering Manager (more about Kyle Favors and HTSU later this week).
As a footnote to this story we should add that the company was acquired by Wood Technologies International in June of 2022 as you can read in this press release;

“Ipsen’s comprehensive training course in vacuum equipment, Ipsen U, is returning in 2023 with some upgrades. Expanded course offerings will dig deeper into metallurgy, thermal processes, troubleshooting and furnace mechanics. The curriculum will also be tailored for each class based on attendees’ industries, job functions and types of furnaces used.
The three-day course, taught by Ipsen subject matter experts, teaches heat-treatment fundamentals and industry best practices and incorporates hands-on training. The course is appropriate for anyone who manages, maintains, or operates vacuum furnace equipment.
