The Buffalo, New York, USA division of Seco Warwick-“Retech” has just announce that they will be expanding their location by 60% and adding up to 60 employees. As a footnote to this story Retech is celebrating their 60th year with a large celebration Friday June 2, 2023. Gord Montgomery of “The Monty Heat Treat News” will be attending and will be reporting on the event.
“Retech, a Seco/Warwick Group company based in Buffalo, New York, USA, has announced it will be expanding into a second location some 60% larger than its current building, which it moved into just five years ago.
The new 6,500 m2 facility will house fabrication, welding, small assemblies, and other manufacturing machinery, which is able to be moved in as soon as possible. The current building, which the company will continue to occupy, will house the R&D operations, large assemblies, and factory acceptance testing operations.
Retech will also be increasing staff, with an estimated thirty to sixty new employees required at various levels.
“When we moved into our new Buffalo headquarters, we anticipated an upward trajectory, but this really exceeds expectations. This move puts us at 113,000 total square feet of R&D, manufacturing, assembly, and storage space, which allows us to stay ahead of that growth instead of catching up to it,” stated Earl Good, Retech Managing Director.

Furnace builder “Ion Heat” who is best known as offering one of the most advanced, cost competitive Ion Nitriding systems around the globe has recently expanded their product offerings to include mesh belt furnace lines. This press release tells the story;
“Ion Heat is working on an order for a full mesh belt line for carburizing and hardening of small assembly screws. Although, this is a new product for Ion Heat, the company and the engineering team are accustomed to take on new challenges.
The line includes an electrically heated endogas generator, 2 continuous washing machines, a gas fired mesh belt carburizing furnace, a gas fired tempering furnace and the weighing and transferring stations.
The engineering phase of the Project has been completed and procurement of components and manufacturing has started.
Even though the new line is a fairly small line for mesh belt furnace standards, it remains a high tech piece of equipment and will be able to process up to 250kg/h of carburized screws. The line is fully automatic and will be controlled from a centralized control station, all with the automation signature of Ion Heat.
Ion Heat is also now working on “White label manufacturing” of furnaces.
That is, Ion Heat has the engineering and manufacturing resources to collaborate with furnace manufacturers to design, or design and manufacture or just manufacture products under their brand name. By being located in a free trade zone, Ion Heat usually purchases components for their technology all around the world, and the import export process is expedited and tax free. Ion Heat is an excellent partner for furnace companies wanting to join forces for the engineering and manufacturing of their products.”

According to the press release below Curtis Metal Finishing has a new controlling shareholder by the name of Primat Group. The history of Curtis Metal Finishing is long and distinguished, dating back to 1916 when Hoensheid Steel Treating was formed by Anthony and Ralph Hoensheid (Father and Son) making this the oldest commercial heat treater in North America as far as “The Monty Heat Treat News” can tell. While originally this was strictly a commercial heat treater this (and the name) changed over the years and the company is now more a coating company than a heat treater.
While the company is based in Michigan they also have a location in Machesney Park, IL, USA which features several very large mesh belt furnace lines.
“May 23, 2023; Primat Group has made a controlling investment in Curtis Metal Finishing Group a provider of protective coatings, pre-treatment, heat treatment and technical intermediation services, based in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Based in Milan, Italy, Primat offers coating services for fasteners primarily for the auto industry. Curtis Metal Finishing is a portfolio company of HCI Equity partners, HCI will continue as a shareholder. Jeff Wilson will continue as CEO of Curtis.”

“According to this press release, furnace builder SOLO Swiss of Switzerland has a new owner. For European heat treaters the name “SOLO Swiss” is a well known furnace brand, however most North American heat treaters will not be familiar with the company. Having said that the company did install a furnace line with salt quenching at a North American manufacturer of fishing tackle just last year.
“The Renaissance Investment Foundation is pleased to announce a new investment in the capital of SOLO Swiss SA as majority shareholder alongside its management. Founded in 1924 and based in Porrentruy in the canton of Jura, SOLO Swiss SA is active in the construction of industrial furnaces for the heat treatment of metals. It exports its equipment worldwide to the automotive, aeronautics, watchmaking, medical, parts and medals and hands industries. With more than 20,000 machines sold worldwide, SOLO Swiss SA is one of the oldest manufacturers of heat treatment furnaces in Europe.
Mr. Xavier Paternot, Managing Partner of Renaissance: “Renaissance is very pleased to count SOLO Swiss SA among its participations. Since its foundation, the company has been able to take a leading position in its market, in Switzerland and internationally. All activities of SOLO Swiss SA are maintained at the current site in Porrentruy. Management and employees remain unchanged to continue the company’s successful development. Late in 2022 “The Monty Heat Treat News” had this story about a captive/commercial heat treater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA closing down their heat treat facility in favor of outsourcing the work; “NOVEMBER 29th 2022; Captive/Commercial Heat Treater Closes Doors-Outsources Heat Treating; In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA we find a reasonably large Captive/Commercial heat treater by the name of Treat All Metals, a division of Regal Rexnord Corp., a manufacturer of electric motors and power transmission components headquartered in Beloit, Wisconsin. For many years Treat All offered a variety of heat treating processes including press quenching on a commercial basis and also as a service for their parent company Regal Rexnord. For unknown reasons to “The Monty Heat Treat News” the company recently decided that it made more sense to outsource the work and the end result is that the company closed down with the equipment being sold off. Part of the equipment, in particular the press quenching systems will go to a local heat treater who will take over the heat treating requirements of Regal Rexnord.”
When we mentioned this story we also said that a local heat treater would be taking over some of the work and buying the equipment in particular the press quenches. As it turns out the “Allcase” batch IQ furnaces, press quenches and related items all went to a large commercial heat treater in the area. “Wisconsin Oven is pleased to announce the shipment of one (1) Electrically Heated Horizontal Quench System to a manufacturer of products for the automotive industry. This system will be used for the solution treatment of aluminum.
The maximum temperature for this horizontal quench furnace is 1,200°F and interior chamber dimensions of 2′ wide x 2′ high x 2′ long. The system has the capacity to heat 450 pounds of aluminum parts and the steel basket within 60 minutes. Temperature uniformity of +/- 10°F at set points 850°F and 1,050°F was verified with a nine (9) point profile test prior to shipment.
This horizontal quench system provides a 15 second quench delay from when the door begins to open until the load is fully submerged in the tank. The quench is manual, where the operator pulls the load out of the oven and onto the quench elevator using a hook. The quench delay time is recorded and enforced using sensors to detect the start and end of the quench operation, and to stop the process if the quench delay time expires.
