My reason for stepping away was to allow more time for volunteering and to enjoy many of the things that I didn’t do while working in metals manufacturing and advancing my career. At the same time, I am still passionate about the industry and do not want to walk away from the friends and relationships I have developed.
About 10 years ago, I was sharing a beer with a fellow Materials Engineer who was closing in on retirement. He commented about the rate of retirement in the field, along with the number of companies who needed an experienced materials or metallurgical engineering resource, but were not large enough to support hiring one full time. ‘They need a fraction of a metallurgist’ he commented.
